Food Traceability Barcodes: Define Identity Before Printing Labels
Design barcode handoffs that preserve product, lot, source, and container identities through receiving and shipping.
Define the workflow and its evidence
Define whether the code identifies a product, lot, container, or location. Related identifiers are not interchangeable. Use official GS1 specifications when adopting GS1 identifiers or data carriers.
Align human-readable text with encoded fields and provide a manual-entry recovery path when scanning fails. Both paths should resolve to the same record.
Work through a concrete handoff
Agree on field meaning with the receiving party. Test leading zeros, punctuation, case, and multiple source lots for one product; a scanner stripping characters can collapse two identities.
Store raw decoded values beside parsed fields and parser version. This permits diagnosis after a supplier’s original packaging is no longer available.
Test the failure before scaling
Scan one case twice and verify that the second scan does not create extra inventory. Then use a damaged label and test manual retrieval.
Use the same printed lot string from two source locations. Correct encoding cannot rescue a downstream model that merges unrelated lots.
- Manual and scan paths agree.
- Raw values survive parser revisions.
- Duplicate scans do not duplicate receipts.
Where FoodChainAPI fits
FoodChainAPI suggests candidate Food Traceability List categories from product descriptions. Save the reviewed result beside the product specification; a category match does not establish exemptions, complete operational records, or certify compliance.
Put the product review into practice
Start with a candidate category in the free FTL lookup. Check product form and exemptions against FDA sources, then save the evidence behind your decision.
