GS1 EPCIS and FSMA 204: Map Events Before Choosing a Platform

Evaluate an EPCIS design against food-lot identities, performed activities, source evidence, and correction recovery.

Define the workflow and its evidence

EPCIS is a GS1 standard for visibility-event data. Its adoption does not itself establish correct food scope or complete FDA records. Define the operational questions first: what happened, to which food and lot, where, when, and with what evidence.

Use the current official standard when selecting event types and identifiers. A conceptual mapping should not be described as a certified implementation or a mandatory regulatory format.

Work through a concrete handoff

Keep product, lot, container, and location identities distinct. A lot received in several cases, aggregated onto a pallet, then split for dispatch must remain retrievable after the container structure changes.

Compare the event design with the relevant CTE and KDE requirements. Shared naming between systems is insufficient if their fields describe different activities.

Test the failure before scaling

Separate physical event time from message ingestion time. A delayed upload should not move a receiving event to the day the server saw it.

Correct one erroneous event and verify how consumers discover the correction. Overwriting the only copy loses what the system previously published.

  • Event and ingestion time are separate.
  • Container changes preserve lots.
  • Correction evidence reaches consumers.

Where FoodChainAPI fits

FoodChainAPI suggests candidate Food Traceability List categories from product descriptions. Save the reviewed result beside the product specification; a category match does not establish exemptions, complete operational records, or certify compliance.

Put the product review into practice

Start with a candidate category in the free FTL lookup. Check product form and exemptions against FDA sources, then save the evidence behind your decision.
