Produce Traceability at the Packhouse: Preserve Harvest-to-Packing Links
Preserve produce source evidence from harvest and cooling into initial packing and downstream food-lot records.
Define the workflow and its evidence
Check the exact commodity and form against the FTL, then map who harvests, cools before initial packing, initially packs, ships, and receives. One company may perform several distinct activities.
Describe the incoming harvest unit and packed output. Where farm maps are required, preserve growing-area information and its version; a farm mailing address does not identify every growing area.
Work through a concrete handoff
FDA identifies initial packing of a raw agricultural commodity, other than food obtained from a fishing vessel, as an activity where a TLC is assigned. Retain the assignment location and its connection to incoming evidence.
Two harvest deliveries packed during one shift may have different origins. A shift code alone cannot explain which inputs contributed to each output. Preserve the actual relationships rather than guessing them from a time range.
Test the failure before scaling
Remove a growing-area reference from one delivery. The system should expose missing evidence rather than fill the field from a previous delivery by the same grower.
Retrieve a shipped lot across a season change. Original identifiers must remain accessible after normalized names or growing-area labels change.
- Activities are mapped separately.
- Packed lots resolve to source records.
- Missing source evidence has an owner.
Where FoodChainAPI fits
FoodChainAPI suggests candidate Food Traceability List categories from product descriptions. Save the reviewed result beside the product specification; a category match does not establish exemptions, complete operational records, or certify compliance.
Put the product review into practice
Start with a candidate category in the free FTL lookup. Check product form and exemptions against FDA sources, then save the evidence behind your decision.
