Food Traceability for Co-Packers: Join Orders to Production Lots

Keep brand-owned SKUs, ingredient lots, specification revisions, rework, and finished-batch shipments distinct in co-packing.

Define the workflow and its evidence

Assess input and output forms against the FTL and review the activities performed. A production run is not automatically an in-scope transformation simply because an input resembles an FTL food.

Retain the specification revision used for the determination. A later recipe change should not replace the evidence for every historical output.

Work through a concrete handoff

Model a run consuming two supplier lots and producing three pallets. Record input identities, amounts and units, output identity, assignment source, and production evidence. Keep customer SKU and manufacturing item ID separate.

Represent rework explicitly. Material from an earlier output entering a later batch should remain linked instead of disappearing into an inventory adjustment.

Test the failure before scaling

Retrieve outputs before and after a recipe revision. Displaying today’s recipe for both has lost decision-time evidence.

Include rework in the retrieval drill and check downstream recipients. Report unresolved quantities and production records rather than claiming complete genealogy from the purchase order.

  • Commercial SKU is distinct from a production lot.
  • Historical outputs retain specifications.
  • Rework remains retrievable.

Where FoodChainAPI fits

FoodChainAPI suggests candidate Food Traceability List categories from product descriptions. Save the reviewed result beside the product specification; a category match does not establish exemptions, complete operational records, or certify compliance.

Put the product review into practice

Start with a candidate category in the free FTL lookup. Check product form and exemptions against FDA sources, then save the evidence behind your decision.
