Commingled Food Lots: Preserve Every Input Relationship
Model commingled food with explicit input lots, output identity, units, yield differences, and incomplete-source handling.
Define the workflow and its evidence
FDA includes commingling in its transformation definition when the output is food on the FTL. Review process, food forms, and exemptions before assigning event requirements.
Keep that scope review separate from genealogy. A business can need source-to-output evidence for its own recall process even outside a particular regulatory requirement.
Work through a concrete handoff
Two cucumber lots enter a cutting run producing three outputs. Preserve all known contributing identities and allocation evidence. If precise allocation is unavailable, record uncertainty instead of inventing proportions.
Support many inputs and many outputs in the record structure. Selecting one convenient input lot for the finished batch erases other relevant sources.
Test the failure before scaling
Yield loss, waste, conversions, and work in progress can explain quantity differences. They do not explain missing identity: balanced totals can coexist with incomplete source records.
Insert one missing input and one unit error into a drill. Both should remain visible with owned correction paths; a partial graph should not be marked complete.
- All known inputs remain linked.
- Unknown allocation stays uncertain.
- Units and yield differences are explained.
Where FoodChainAPI fits
FoodChainAPI suggests candidate Food Traceability List categories from product descriptions. Save the reviewed result beside the product specification; a category match does not establish exemptions, complete operational records, or certify compliance.
Put the product review into practice
Start with a candidate category in the free FTL lookup. Check product form and exemptions against FDA sources, then save the evidence behind your decision.
